A. Siegel - one of the most famous auctioneers in the world - has put his ´Rareties of the World´ Auctions since 1964 on the WEB. You will find them under http://siegelauctions.com/rarities.htm. It seems to be a fantastic source of information, specially because realised prices are mentioned. So you can follow also the price evolution of some items over more than 40 years.

Introduction of the homepage:

Since 1964, the Siegel firm’s annual RARITIES OF THE WORLD™ sales have brought to auction the largest number of philatelic rarities ever handled by one firm. Thousands of items across a wide range of categories, along with descriptions and prices realized from every Rarities sale, may now be accessed from the Siegel website free of charge.

The images from sales prior to 1998 were scanned from color slides. Beginning in 1998, each item was scanned directly from the item. This the only digital archive of Siegel Rarities lots available anywhere. It is an unparalleled resource for all philatelists. The Rarities archive may be searched on a sale by sale basis. By March 2008, the Siegel firm will launch a searchable database for all Rarities sales and every auction since Sale 748 (1993). The search functions will allow users to find items across all sales by category or Scott number.

As America’s premier stamp auctioneer since 1930, we believe we have an obligation to make our archives available to philatelists. As professionals, we understand how information helps bidders make informed judgments about quality, rarity and value, and we see the benefits in higher realizations for our consignors.
