20.02.2017 - Philatelic treasures from the collection of Queen Elizabeth II

(Postimuseo Finland) The Vapriikki Postal Museum in the Finnish town of Tampere (address: Alaverstaanraitti 5) will offer its visitors a special treat: it will have parts from the Royal Collection of Queen Elizabeth II – especially the first issue of 1840 – on show. From 28th April to 28th May 2017, the exhibits can be seen in the aforementioned Postal Museum. It is the first time that these philatelic treasures from the Royal Collection will be shown in Scandinavia. In addition, philatelic rarities from the museum's collection will be on display. The exhibition will be held in conjunction with the Philatelic Event Finlandia 2017, which will be held in Tampere at the end of May.
The exhibition presents unique exhibits from the years 1839-1840, which were relevant for the production of the world's first stamps and postal items. The most important item is the so-called Kirkcudbright cover (see picture), that shows ten black One Penny stamps, used on the first day of issue of the famous Penny Black.
