18.01.2017 - Lost Jenny 79 now for sale after almost 100 years

(mb) It had been ‘lost’ for some time: one of the American misprints that were sold in 1918 and that we now know as ‘Inverted Jenny’s’. One of the misprints was the stamp on position 79. It had been in a private collection since it was separated from the original sheet of misprints in 1918. But now ‘position 79’ is up for sale. The Philatelic Foundation has authenticated the stamp and it will be offered at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers on 15 February 2017. There is a presale estimate of between $200,000 and $300,000.
In addition to the Jenny, the sale includes an unknown example of a block-of-four of the 1901 Pan American Automobile Stamp with inverted center (estimated at $150,000-250,000), a center invert 1901 Pan American Fast Express stamp (estimated at $15,000-25,000), a rare tête-bêche pair of the Buffalo Balloon (estimated at $5,000-7,000) and an imprint block of twelve Bolivian Air Post stamps (1924, face value 10 centavos) with inverted centers (estimated at $10,000-15,000).
Catalogues for this sale are available for $10 at the gallery or $15 by mail. Catalogue listings for both sales will be available online at
