The Chapter for the Jan Witkowski Medal, an award from the Philatelic Study Group Poland (officially connected with the German Philatelic Association/BDPh), has decided that, for the year 2010, this medal will go to Andrzej Fischer from Bytom (Poland). With the award of the Jan Witkowski Medal the aforementioned Study Group recognizes the work of Andrzej Fischer, his varied activities and his extraordinary commitment to philately as well as the fact that he has shown financial courage by publishing outstanding philatelic catalogues of Poland, and for his work for many decades in the interest of Polish philately.

Andrzej Fischer was born on 23 July 1940, in Lwów. He is a graduate of the Jagiellonian University of Krakow, is the co-author and editor of a number of the now famous and reliable publications about the philately of Poland that go under the masthead of his own name. Since 1996, these ‘FISCHER’ catalogues have been published by Mr. Fischer’s publishing house. It concerns specialized stamp catalogues that deal about Poland exclusively and have become the main reference books for Poland collectors. Without the existence of these catalogues Polish Philately of today would be almost unimaginable.

Andrzej Fischer also edits the philatelic monthly ‘Przeglad Filatelistyczny’ (‘Philatelic Revue’), one of the two most important philatelic magazines in the Polish language.
