The readers of Gabriel (a magazine published in the German-speaking countries, edited by the World Alliance of Organized Philatelists ´St. Gabriel´) have chosen the most beautiful stamp issue with a Christian theme for the year 2011. The winner is a miniature sheet issued by the Polish Post on 28 April 2011, dedicated to the beatification of ‘the Pope from Poland’, John Paul II. The block has been issued jointly with an stamp issue of the Vatican postal administration.

The miniature sheet shows a saluting Pope against the background of an image of Christ blessing. Bottom right St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is shown. John Paul II has been beatified on 1 May 2011, by his successor Pope Benedict XVI.

Gabriel is the magazine for German-speaking countries inside the World Federation of St. Gabriel; the latter brings together philatelists collecting material that show the spirit of ecumenism and Christianity, for instance stamps, postmarks and other postal material.
